How are the roads? On Santiago Island most roads, until recently, were laid with cobblestones. However, major dual carriageway road building programmes with tarmac have already been undertaken and a few more large projects are underway or planned. The main roads in the City of Praia and the main interior road between Sao Domingos to Assomada have been undertaken. In June 2005, work began on the road between Praia and Sao Domingos. Work also commenced in April 2005 on the 'ring road' that will link the new Praia airport to the northern districts of the city and continue down to the western side of the city to Palmarejo. There are currently 2 roads to Sambala Village from Praia / the airport. Additionally the government is planning to build a new road from the ring road in the near future. Sambala is awaiting official news that this will begin in April 2008. Furthermore, the Prime Minister has announced the planning of a major new highway from Praia to Tarrafal that will follow the eastern coast of Santiago Island passing alongside the Sambala tourism development region. |
