New desalination unit for Sao Nicolau The UN is to provide funding to help the Cape Verdean island to produce drinking water Cape Verde property investors were handed a boost yesterday (April 15th) after it was announced that a small desalination unit will be installed in Sao Nicolau. The country's government and the United Nations Organisation (UN) have signed a contract worth 133 million escudos (£1.07 million), weekly newspaper A Semana reports. Under the terms of the deal, the UN will provide funding to ensure that the plant is installed, enabling drinking water to be distributed across the island. The news comes after Petra Lantz, the UN coordinator in Cape Verde, and secretary of state for the economy Humberto Brito commenced a three-day visit to Sao Nicolau. According to the newspaper, the two dignitaries have been assessing various projects which are taking place in the municipal areas of Ribeira Brava and Tarrafal. Water company Electra announced recently that it will be doubling production at its Palmarejo plant in Praia to 12,000 cubic metres per day by the end of the year.
