Production to be doubled at Praia desalination plant Cape Verde property investors boosted by latest scheduled improvements Praia residents are set to have more desalinated water after Electra announced plans to double production at its Palmarejo plant, Inforpress reports today (March 23rd). Antonio Pina, the water and electricity company's director for production and distribution for the southern region, revealed that output will be doubled to 12,000 cubic metres per day by the end of the year. Furthermore, he stated that the firm is seeking funding for other projects, such as a new unit with a 5,000 cubic metre capacity and improving the water storage system at Monte Babosa. If the 12,000 cubic metres per day target is met, the upshot would be that the city's residents would be entitled to an impressive average of 82 litres of water every day. This compares favourably to World Health Organisation standards, which state that small towns must receive a minimum of 80 litres per day and significantly industrialised cities should have 1,000 litres per day. The news will presumably be welcomed by anyone with a Cape Verde property investment, as such infrastructure improvements are likely to boost interest in the archipelago. Between 1994 and 2000, about $407 million (£281.6 million) in foreign investments were made or planned in Cape Verde.
