Minister reveals energy objectives for Cape Verde Economy minister explains renewable energy target for Cape Verde Cape Verde officials are attempting to reduce the environmental impact of life on the islands by producing more renewable energy. Despite the country's former status as a major refuelling station for ships crossing the Atlantic, Cape Verde is hoping to end its reliance on traditional fuels and instead focus on renewables, economic affairs minister Fatima Fialho said. She told the AFP news agency that Cape Verde is working towards a target of producing 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. Ms Fialho explained that the energy project is part of the archipelago's "agenda for an economic change", which also involves Cape Verde becoming a hub for sea transport once again. "Cape Verde can become a country that provides services linked to port activities, tourism, finance, fishing and transport," she said. Last month it was announced that construction of a new electricity plant on Santiago Island will begin in January 2009.
