New power plant to boost Cape Verde electricity supply Santiago island to house new electricity plant for Cape Verde Work to improve the distribution of electricity in Cape Verde will begin early next year, it has been confirmed. Construction of a new power plant for the islands is scheduled to start in late January 2009, according to Cape Verde's director general for industry and energy Abraao Lopes. Situated on Santiago island, the project is worth an estimated €40 million (£31.5 million) and will be financed by three major banks, macauhub.com reports. Mr Lopes announced that an agreement between the Cape Verde authorities and two Portuguese construction firms was signed in Praia on Tuesday, with the next two months being devoted to the manufacture of equipment and materials. He called the development "an extremely complex project, in technical and financial terms" before adding that "the companies will be on the ground around the end of January". Mr Lopes said the project will make significant improvements to Cape Verde's electricity system once completed. Earlier this month, a Portuguese construction firm began work on the expansion of the port in Praia.
