John and Selma Halsall, who hail from Cholsey in Oxfordshire, decided to quit their jobs and go sailing through across the Atlantic with their two children, Ella, aged nine and seven-year-old Jacobus. On the way to the Caribbean, the family took in the surroundings of the Bay of Biscay, Portugal and Cape Verde. "From Cape Verde we did a right to cross the Atlantic," explained Mr Halsall. "We just saw blue sky and sea and lots of dolphins. Every time you see them they make your heart leap". After spending five months sailing around the Caribbean islands, Mrs Halsall and the children flew back to the UK, allowing Mr Halsall to complete his first-ever solo sailing trip across the Atlantic. Anther individual who found themselves in awe of Cape Verde after visiting the country was journalist George Rush, who was writing last month for the Conde Nast Traveler and described the bustling and colourful markets of Praia.
