Unesco world heritage status 'would boost tourism' on Santiago Island According to a property firm in Cape Verde, unesco world heritage status would help tourism along on Santiago Island. If the capital city of Cape Verde, which is located on Santiago Island, is granted world heritage status as part of a review by unesco this month, it will do wonders for tourism in the area. This is the viewpoint of David Endersey, a sales executive at Cape Verde Property, who believes that the unesco status would significantly help to raise the profile of Santiago Island among tourists and people seeking property abroad. Mr Endersey stated that although the Cape Verde island of Sal currently attracts the bulk of visitors due to its volume of beaches, Santiago is home to the country's ancient capital city Praia. He added that a unesco seal of approval "is bound to encourage tourism to a certain extent", which could result in more expats or keen travellers looking for Cape Verde property. Praia, which was established in 1615, became Cape Verde's capital in 1770 and is home to an international airport, which opened in 2005.
